Principal’s Message from Heidi Galassi 

Landels has had some exciting visitors this week!  First, we had a visit from Lannie Skywalker. He told us all about this year’s theme for our walk-a-thon.  Can you guess what it is? 

Next, we had a visit from Mr. Michael Katz who has been a storyteller for over 30 years.  He shared some diverse stories with us through interactive movement and active engagement.

 Also, all our students are using iReady in the classroom at some capacity for reading and mathematical concepts.  Your child can login through Clever at home, as well. Ask them how to use it and see what it looks like. He or she should always have 20 ready-made personalized lessons in their queue at all times.  All students will be taking a diagnostic once a trimester to measure growth. 

There will be no music or art classes next week (October 8-12), due to conferences.

We are implementing a new volunteer sign up system.  During parent-teacher conferences, each teacher will give you an opportunity to volunteer before and/or after school as well as during lunch and recess using

National Walk to School day is Wednesday, October 10! 

Join children and adults around the world to celebrate the benefits of walking and bicycling! Walking and bicycling to school enables children to incorporate the regular physical activity they need each day while also forming healthy habits that can last a lifetime. Regular physical activity helps children build strong bones, muscles and joints, and it decreases the risk of obesity. In contrast, insufficient physical activity can contribute to chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and stroke. 

Walk & Roll will be giving additional “punches” on your Walk & Roll cards for all walkers and rollers on Wednesday!

Expiration of Free & Reduced Eligibility Status!

The 30-day grace period for last year’s eligibility status for Free & Reduced students has expired.  Unless students have submitted an application, they will be charged the full price for breakfast/snack ($2.50) and lunch ($3.50) starting on September 24.  You can still submit an application online, please go to

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child’s reading habits.

Family Night on Thursday, October 11 6:00pm-8:00pm in conjunction with Family fun Night!

Family Fun Night with Book & Bubbles!

We are super excited to announce our first Books and Bubbles Family Fun Night!

Join us from 6pm - 8pm on Thursday, October 11 in the MUR.  We have a LIVE SHOW from BubbleMania at 6:15pm! We also have crafts, games and our Book Fair will be open throughout! We will be selling Pizza and Drinks. So come, grab dinner, watch a show and shop the book fair! See flyer attached. 

Membership Challenge!

It’s time for the Landels PTA Membership Challenge. We need you - parents, teachers, staff, friends, and families - to join the Landels PTA force!

The Landels PTA pays for field trips, assemblies, classroom supplies, teacher appreciation, equipment, and more!

Your classrooms have the chance to win Scholastic Dollars, a popsicle party, or both! The 3 classrooms with the highest percentages of members will win.

Walkathon & Silent Auction- Packets sent home!

There are less than 4 weeks until Landels elementary transforms into a Galaxy Far, Far Away for the 2018 Walkathon and Silent Auction. Check your kid’s backpack for the packet! The packet will include pledge forms, pre-order forms for t-shirts and tickets, and the t-shirt contest.

You can start collecting pledges at now or on the pledge form sent home. 

T-shirt contest entries due on October 9. Please remind your children! All students are encouraged to enter the t-shirt contest.  One winner will be chosen for every grade and will receive a prize of Scholastic Dollars to spend at the upcoming Fall Book-fair!  In addition, the overall winner will have their design on the back of the t-shirt, which will be available to purchase shortly! 

Get Involved!

Volunteer, collect pledges with your child, make a donation and attend the event! volunteer at .  We can’t do this without you! Older siblings, family and friends are all welcome to volunteer.  The students love nothing more than to see familiar faces!

Donate to the Silent Auction!

The Silent Auction is in need of items for donation. Do you or someone you know own a business that could donate products or services? Are you a season ticket holder to professional sporting events, theaters, dance or musical companies and could donate tickets to an event?  Do you have a special talent you could offer or an item that you’d like to donate yourself?  If so, please fill out the online Donation Form by Friday, October 5. 

Calling all Party People!

Would you be willing to team up with some other parents to host a theme party where people donate to the PTA to attend? This is the idea behind our Silent Auction Parties and we need lots of families to join in on the fun. Past party themes include cookie decorating, wine tasting, mini golf, billiards, and tamale making. The ideas are endless, so grab some parent friends and get creative. Use the online Party Donation Form to reserve your party theme or email Laryssa Polika-Engle ( if you need additional help. 

Want to donate something smaller? We have a collection bin in the office for small prizes! If you have a gift card, small unwanted (new and unopened) gift at home, or can purchase something from $1-$10 at the store, please drop it into our collection bin! Everything makes a difference!

MV Parent U presents “Cyber bullying: What parents need to know about cyber bullying and its effect on students' mental health.” 

When: Wednesday, October 10th from 6:30-8pm at the Graham Middle School Auditorium.

My student is in school most of the time, so that’s ok, right?

Most parents are aware of what it means for a child to be truant from school. However, there is a new push through the state of California to reduce the numbers of students who are “chronically absent.” Students who are chronic absent typically attend school fairly regularly, but miss a few days here and there, which really add up and affect their learning. It's important to know both excused or unexcused absences count toward chronic absenteeism.

Chronically absent students have been absent (either excused or unexcused) for 10% of the time that school has been in session. For example, if your student has been absent 2 days before Sept. 15, he is chronically absent.  If your student has been absent 5 days before Oct. 20, she is chronically absent. An average of 2 days absent a month means a student is chronically absent. The District is now required to track this data and report it to the state.   For more information, click here.

Family Talk: Puberty program

Health Connected, in partnership with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, is holding "Family Talk: Puberty program designed to promote healthy communication within families that lasts a lifetime!" Through drawings, multimedia, and activities, Health Connected's parent-child communication expert, Vanessa Kellam, will guide families as they explore the physical changes that many youth experience during puberty. In a relaxed setting, families will learn, laugh and share, making a potentially sensitive subject more comfortable.

This 90 minute program is recommended for children between 10-12 years old and their families; however, adults may bring children younger or older, depending on their maturity level. Families of all structures - moms, dads, grandparents and trusted adults - are welcome! Tickets are $25 per family (plus handling fees).

Are you concerned about your child? Want to find out more about resources available for help? Want to meet other families who may be dealing with similar concerns?

Please come to our Parent Coffee for SELPA 1 CAC and the Learning Challenges Committee! These are two organizations in Mountain View that help families of students with accommodations or who receive special education services. We also put on Ability Awareness events, have parent education events, support groups, and resource fairs.

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session - October 23rd


You can change the life of a student!


Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8 in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.


There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer.  You're welcome to just come and learn more about what we do. 


All volunteers must be high school graduates.
